Whereas:
- Bill C-11 (The Online Streaming Act) makes streaming services more expensive for Canadians;
- It builds on CanCon rules, designed for radio decades ago, which are out of touch with today's global interconnected world;
- It forces Canadian artists to meet arbitrary content standards, restricting their creativity to work multiculturally;
- It is especially problematic for emerging artists who are at an earlier stage of trying to connect with global audiences and want to work with producers and writers outside of Canada; and
- It has not addressed international multinationals operating in Canada, who have greatly enriched themselves as record labels and music publishers, with very limited investment in Canadian talent, which has greatly decreased the number of signed artists all the while encouraging Canadian artists to seek government funding instead of distribution deals.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to scrap C-11 and to modernize CanCon rules to ensure that all Canadian artists and fans have access to the music they love.
